Start your fin selection with the board’s fin box and the manufacturer’s recommended range. Fin length alone does not describe area, shape or the way a fin works with a particular board and sail.
Confirm the connection
Check the exact fin-box system, including any distinction between Tuttle and Deep Tuttle. Match the screw type and length to the board and fin. Never assume that a similar-looking head will seat correctly or that screws from another fin are suitable.
Use the board’s range as your starting point
Compare the recommended fin range with your sail size, rider weight and discipline. A freeride fin, wave fin and weed fin can differ substantially in shape and area at the same nominal length. Multi-fin boards require a setup intended for that board rather than a single-fin sizing rule.
Change one variable at a time
If the board repeatedly loses lateral grip, check for weeds, damage and a poorly seated fin before changing size. Review sail trim and how much pressure you apply through the back foot. If the board feels difficult to control, test within the manufacturer’s range rather than immediately fitting a much smaller fin.
Before the next session
- Inspect the fin, head and box for damage.
- Confirm a proper fit and the specified fasteners.
- Record the fin and sail combination you tested.
- Use local water depth and obstacles when choosing where to sail.
