The right windsurf mast starts with your sail, not its carbon percentage. A mast with the correct length can still be a poor match if its diameter, stiffness or bend curve differs from the sail designer’s specification.
Read the sail’s specification first
Find the rigging guide for the exact sail model, size and year. Note the recommended mast length, IMCS stiffness, RDM or SDM diameter and any approved alternatives. Check the required extension range as well. A brand name alone is not enough to establish compatibility.
RDM, SDM and bend curve
RDM and SDM describe reduced and standard mast diameters. Use the type approved for the sail and a matching extension; the boom head may also require an adapter. Bend curve describes how the mast flexes along its length. An incompatible curve can change the sail profile and make tuning difficult. Use the sail maker’s recommendation and a current compatibility guide rather than assuming every mast labelled constant curve is interchangeable.
How much carbon do you need?
Compare weight, intended use, construction, warranty and budget after confirming compatibility. A higher carbon percentage is not a universal guarantee of greater durability or a better setup for every rider.
Before ordering
- Identify the sail model, size and year.
- Confirm mast length, IMCS, diameter and bend curve.
- Check extension and boom compatibility.
- For a used mast, inspect both sections and the joint; reject visible damage or uncertain compatibility.
